Lap Band Radio – Coach Cher’s Band Banter

Posted by Lori on July 13, 2009

I forgot to post this. Coach Cher has been doing a weekly show for a couple years now geared towards inspiring weight loss surgery patients to work hard at getting healthy and getting to goal. Band Banter will be on  in just a few minutes. But always worth your time to go through her back episodes and see who she is interviewing. I’ve learned a lot of interesting from her, so check it out.

Band Banter with Coach Cher today at 4pm CDT.

Posted by Lori on October 27, 2008

Coach Cher is on Blog Talk Radio tonight with Iris Stratton. The blurb for today’s show is:

Join me as I discuss Lapband 101 with Iris Stratton co-founder of Fill Centers USA. Iris currently serves as the company’s CEO. She wrote the fitness, supplementation and nutrition portions of the Fill Centers USA Lifestyle Guide. Iris’s dream is to “work hand in hand with the participating surgeons to make this surgery revolutionary to the world by making aftercare more advanced and geographically adequate for each and every patient.

Particularly, if you are going out of country for weight loss surgery, you should check out Fill Centers USA– it’s a good deal. The first order of business is to provide fills in a professional atmosphere for Lap Band patients. But they also provide post-surgical support groups, and this is important, because bariatric patients who attend support groups do better than those who don’t attend support groups.

I will give you one line from a study on the subject:

Gastric bypass patients in the ASGM (Attend Support Group Meetings) group had a statistically significantly higher percent decrease in BMI than the patients in the NASGM (Not Attend Support Group meetings) group (42% vs. 32%; p < 0.03).

Hopefully, that 10% will get your attention and get you out to some support groups. Listen to Coach Cher today. Should be good.

Colleen Cook’s Rules For Reaching Goal Weight

Posted by Lori on June 5, 2008

Colleen Cook from Bariatric Support Centers International was on Weight Loss Surgery Radio last week with Cher Ewing and Jeff Cadwell. She had weight loss surgery back in the late nineties and discovered that there was no real support system in place for the patients – so she created one. Anyway, they’ve done a close look at their client’s who successfully reach their goal weights and these are the principles they’ve found in common.

Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients

1. Personal Accountability
I recognize that I alone am responsible for my successes and my failures.

2. Portion Control
I understand the importance of satiety and listen to my body’s signals.

3. Proper Nutrition
I make good healthy food choices each day.

4. Fluid Intake
I drink the right amount of the right beverages at the right time each day.

5. Regular Exercise
I have adopted the habit of exercise as part of my lifestyle.

I take good quality vitamins each day to ensure my good health.
All of the podcasts from Jeff and Cher’s show are available here. And their blog, with plenty to read,  is here.

Weight Loss Surgery Radio Today at 5pm PST

Posted by Lori on May 28, 2008

Cher Ewing and Jeff Cadwell are both weight loss surgery patients and Life Coaches. Cher has had a Lap Band and Jeff a gastric bypass. They do weekly 90 minute broadcasts about various issues of interest to weight loss surgery patients. I like what they do because they have first hand knowledge of what the process is and that’s incredibly valuable.

Today, they have, as their guest, Colleen Cook who is a weight loss surgery patient and founder of Bariatric Support Centers International. From the press release on the show:

Join Cher & Jeff as they talk with Colleen Cook about her story. Colleen is a weight-loss surgery patient from 1995.

She is the founder of Bariatric Support Centers International, an extraordinary company that specializes in providing long-term education and support services for weight-loss surgery patients. She is also the founder and former chair of the National Support Group Network for Allied Health Sciences, a committee of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
Colleen is a sought after speaker & former host of her radio show, “Obesity’s Surgical Solution”. She is the author of the internationally acclaimed “Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients“. She has an extensive background in group organization, meeting facilitation, and leadership training. Known as Ms. Enthusiasm, Colleen helps men and women from all walks of life recognize their extraordinary potential and then inspires them to aspire even higher.

Her book, which I linked from my bookstore, is out of print and ridiculously expensive secondhand (not her doing). So, I’m going to spend some time at Ms. Cook’s website and see what kind of things I can learn. We do know, as I remind you so endlessly, that people who have weight loss surgery and attend support groups lose more weight than those who don’t. And this is all about the weight loss.

By the way, Jeff and Cher maintain podcasts of all their shows, so even if you miss one, you can catch up again later.

It’s a beautiful day in Southern California and I have got a lot of running around to do. So, I’m gonna put on my running around clothes and go do it. It even smells good today. The flowers are blooming mad.

Weight Loss Surgery Radio: Obesity Help

Posted by Lori on May 6, 2008

Cher and Jeff’s guests this week are Nikki Johnson – Editor in Chief of OH Magazine, Cathy Wilson – Director of Support Groups and Joanna Fee – Events Manager. For those of you who don’t know Obesity Help, it’s a tremendous online support site with an enormous amount of information.

Last week, they had Dr. Trace Curry on, and I had really wanted to listen because I have questions for him. Mysteriously, it kept crashing my normally crash-proof Safari Browser so I didn’t get to ask. I know Cher is crazy about him and is very quick to tell people that he is an accessable and patient surgeon who answers emails. 🙂 More like that, please. Anyway, I’ve linked the podcast of his chat. It starts about twenty minutes in to the show. I hope you enjoy it.

Dr. Terry Simpson on Reaching Your Lap Band Goal Weight

Posted by Lori on May 4, 2008

I discovered Phoenix, Arizona surgeon Dr. Terry Simpson of Southwest Weight Loss from Weight Loss Surgery Radio. Jeff and Cher have a fantastic podcast with him which I linked previously. He was late calling in so his interview doesn’t start until about 40 minutes in. It’s well worth the listen.

He has a series of podcasts linked on his own site that I’ve been listening to. The one that really caught my attention was entitled GETTING TO GOAL – it’s all the way down at the bottom of the page. He’s got a lot to say about the habits you need to form to be successful – none of which are unreasonable or at odds with your basic biology. His practice took a look at their patients that got to their goal weight and figured out what they had in common with eatch other. The number one thing was that they had a goal weight; and the number two thing was that they adjusted their behavior to get there. For instance, Dr. Simpson suggests adjusting your calorie intake to match the calorie intake of the size you want to be and has a BMR table to help you calculate that. As an example, someone who is in their early fifties, is 5’3″ and weighs 235 needs to consume about 1800 calories to maintain that weight. If you want to get down to 120, you’re going to need to drop your calorie intake to about 1100 per day – right about where the average Lap Bandee is already.

Dr. Simpson has a lot of video on his site that I haven’t even begun to dig into. He’s a bright, appealing guy and I think you’ll enjoy the time you spend there. He has two books for sale in my bookstore – LOSING THE LAST THIRTY POUNDS: THE FUNDAMENTALS OF WEIGHT LOSS and WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY – A LIGHTER LOOK AT A HEAVY SUBJECT. When you’re through looking around, if you want to read more, come on back and buy a book. Mama is still saving to buy that new tripod!

Weight Loss Surgery Radio Tonight at 8pm EST

Posted by Lori on April 30, 2008

And 5pm here on my beloved west coast. Alright, Life Coaches and bariatric surgery patients Cher Ewing and Jeff Cadwell are having surgery Dr. Trace Curry on this show tonight. Here’s what they have to say:

Trace W. Curry, M.D. is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive weight loss surgery. He is a Cincinnati native and trained at Good Samaritan Hospital. He is the director of bariatric surgery at The Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati and has performed well over 1300 laparoscopic gastric bands, 700 laparoscopic bypasses, and 75 sleeve gastrectomies, making him one of the most experienced in the region at the laparoscopic technique.

You can call in and ask questions, if you’d like. I’m looking forward to it!
